Note from ICRA Past-President

I would like to thank the ICRA board for drawing my name to attend the NCRA Conference in Washington, DC this year. It was very beneficial to work on the Regional Meeting during our breaks with the other committee members in attendance. Regional meetings were discussed a lot at the President's Breakfast. One suggested that every year was too much work and that every two years seemed to work to capture anyone needing hours in their CE cycle. The biggest issue seemed to be not being able to find practicum sites for students in CIM programs. The Texas president stated she couldn't find one in her whole state for one student. Members were asking the NCRA board to consider making changes to alleviate this issue, some suggestions were to design something on the NCRA website or on SEER Educate. There was a lot of discussion on the problems states were having on trying to collect money by credit cards. A representative from Illinois brought up the system they were using worked quite well for them and was easy to track the individual who was registering, which was one of the big issues some were having. The work we got done on the Regional Meeting was invaluable to me and helped us to hit the ground running once we returned.

I participated in the "Walk on the Hill" and would recommend it to anyone who attends a future conference in DC. You attend a short training session and they give you handouts to leave with them. I was paired with Kathy Magoon. It was pouring that day and our legs and feet got soaked even with umbrellas and rain coats. To see the inside of the Senate and Congress is a memorable experience. We weren't able to see our representatives, but saw their assistants who were quite interested in our information. One assistant asked a page to escort us to the underground train. He gave us information of what to see and to eat in the congressional lunchroom during our wait for our next appointment. We were given a link to access the sessions we missed during the day.

The NCRA conference sessions were interesting and you can check out the manual and the USB drive that is in the library to get the information you would like. You have to apply for CE credits if you need them.

The regional meeting was very informative and we had had 128 registrations. We heard nothing but great compliments from those who spoke to us when it was over. I enjoyed working with the Illinois committee very much and they had experience making arrangement with hotels, so that was a big bonus. We based our figures on a low attendance since this was the first one. We are sorry the blocked rooms went so quickly, but one again we had no idea of attendance and didn't want to pay for rooms that weren't used. I made a flash drive which should help the next committee have a better idea to make improvements. I think it was a great success, and want to thank everyone on the committee.

The best news was ICRA received a check for over $3200 once the expenses were paid!

Thank you for the opportunities ICRA has given me this year!

Dr. Mahul Amin dedicates AJCC Manual 8th Edition to Cancer Registrars

Dr. Mahul Amin Announces Dedication of the

AJCC Cancer Staging Manual Eighth Edition to Cancer Registrars

Las Vegas, NV, April 12, 2016—Mahul B. Amin, MD, FACS, FCAP, Editor-In-Chief, AJCC Cancer Staging Manual Eighth Edition, announced at the National Cancer Registrars Association’s (NCRA) 42nd Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV, that the 8th Edition will be dedicated to cancer registrars. Dr. Amin cited that the honor was to recognize cancer registrars’ education and unique commitment to the recording and maintenance of data that are so vital for the care of the cancer patient. He noted their professionalism in the collection of factors fundamental to sustaining local, state, and national cancer registries and their dedication to the cataloging of information crucial to cancer research. He also described their leadership and support of the principles of cancer staging.

NCRA President Leah Kiesow, MBA, CTR, thanked the American Joint Committee on Cancer for this extraordinary honor. She noted that as the national professional organization of over 5,800 cancer registrars, NCRA is pleased to know that the data collected by registrars play such a vital role in updating the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual. The manual is used by physicians worldwide to stage a patient’s cancer and is critical in guiding treatment and determining prognosis. Kiesow stated, “Cancer registrars are elated to be acknowledged by the AJCC for the role they play in improving cancer-patient outcomes.”

San Antonio update from our President

I would like to thank all of you for the privilege of representing the ICRA as your President at the NCRA Conference in San Antonio, TX this year. The President’s Lunch was very informative and I will share a couple things at the ICRA Fall workshop that were the most interesting to me. A lot of organizations have April Fritz coming to their workshops yet this year, but they are large organizations also.

There was so much information covered at the conference! I figured out on the last conference day, if you get the book (very heavy), leave it in the room and take notes in a notebook. Transfer them to the book later. Better yet, download them on your laptop, tablet, or computer (leave at home) and take notes in a notebook. You don’t have to carry your device around with you all day, and the slides are easier to see up on the screen. The book wasn’t in color, which would help with some of the slides. Having the book helped to choose which of the break-out sessions would be the most interesting to attend.

I had a great time during the free time. A group of us went on a River Dinner Cruise on a beautiful evening. We had a little excitement with a head-on run-in with another boat. It was more like bumper boats! The dinner was fantastic. We went out to eat down the Riverwalk one night and got caught in a torrential downpour. Some of us got drenched, so we chose to eat outside at the restaurant since there was a three hour wait for a table. It had quit raining and they dried off the table and chairs.

I won the SEER Educate basket which was awesome!! It had gift cards totaling over $450 along with jewelry and multiple pampering  spa items, chocolates and other treats. I had to ship it home for $85, but was well worth it!  Next year, Las Vegas!!

The lady who won the Iowa Basket loved every item in it! That was the basket she wanted to win. She wanted a Kindle Fire so bad and hasn’t wanted to spend the money on it. I put in some items from the Iowa Machine Shed and she loved each and every one of them. I had a couple pictures taken with her and me, but her eyes were closed in both of them. Lori caught her just a short while later and got a picture of her.

This trip was a wonderful experience for me and will be a treasured memory.

NCRA BASKET won by Carol Fredenburg !!!

From Carol Fredenberg:

Here is the contents of the NCRA Basket that I won. In the prize winnings were a $50 gift card for Amazon, and a $50 gift card for LL Bean. The best item was the certificate for a full conference registration for next year in San Antonio! My three grandkids were there when I unpacked the box so I am not well put together, but they couldn’t wait to see what I pulled out next. at least take some home. My grandson loves the John Deere toys. Different states put a donation in the box, so there is quite a variety of items. Idaho had some fantastic recipes for using potatoes, which I gave to my son and daughter-in-law who were chefs.  She’s excited to try them out. The chocolates went to work to share with everyone.

We need YOU!

ICRA is looking for YOU!

Nominating committee is still looking for a few more people to run for office. We would like to have two people running for each position!

Deadline is April 15th, 2014

Here are some great testimonials from board members about the benefits and rewards of serving on the ICRA Board.

Serving on the ICRA Board has been a great opportunity to get to know other members better and to obtain a better understanding of what the ICRA Board does.  – Erica Hemsley, ICRA Treasurer

The benefits of being VP are that  get to know other ICRA members, learn about the By Laws, and  bring  fresh new ideas to  improve the association and  benefit all members. – Jennie Jamison, ICRA Vice President

For the Secretary office, it is mainly to take minutes of the Board meetings that are held usually once a year and for the Business meetings which can be in the spring & fall.  For me being from the NE Iowa area, it was an excellent opportunity for me to get to  know some ICRA members  better and to see what a strong association we are.  The support and knowledge is there for us to do our jobs successfully and to continue to grow.  The time element of this position is minimal and the benefits of it are limitless.  –Teresa Merkel, ICRA Secretary

Being an ICRA Board member was a great experience to learn what all goes on in the our organization. So many have no clue and need to understand what it takes to keep it all going.

I enjoyed getting to know the people, and the how to of running a board and its members and trying to make ICRA better. It is a challenge, but it is a fun one. We have a lot of years of experience in our organization, and great people. We aren’t as big as some states but we are big enough. I was just told the other day that the people in Iowa that get trained for abstracting are far better abstractors then in most states. (This person hires people from all over the Us.) So we should be proud of our organization and what we have offered our members and keep pushing forward with the education, because we know it is forever changing. You don’t have to know everything before coming a board member, it is a learning experience and you learn as go. We're all in it together.

--Carol Anderson Soy, ICRA Past President

I have had the privilege of being a board member for the last 6 years and it has been an amazing experience! When I first started on the board I had very little knowledge regarding the details of ICRA. I didn’t know much about the by-laws or what the members of the board actually did. I was welcomed by an amazing group of people who helped educate me as well as learning as a group the details of ICRA, the benefits and rewards that you can get from becoming active. It gave the opportunity to meet more people and establish connections and relationships with people all over Iowa as well as surrounding states! I interacted more in meetings as I felt more comfortable with the group by becoming more involved. As President I will be attending NCRA this year, Thank you ICRA, J and we had enough money in the budget to pay registration for two more board members!!! It is fun to think of new ways to engage our group and get people excited and involved. Your leadership can help continue to do that!! Each position is important and holds something special that can be delivered to the group. It just needs YOU!

 –Tania Viet, ICRA President

Please feel free to contact anyone on the board if you have specific questions about their job and what it entails. We would be glad to talk to you!!

If you are interested in running, please contact Bobbi Matt or Judy Sebern-Beachy.

Visit website to learn more (bylaws gives details).

ICRA needs YOU!

ICRA Nominating Committee needs your help!

Speaking from experience (I have served as ICRA President three times over 30 years), serving as an officer for ICRA can be rewarding and fun.  As an ICRA officer, you will help make decisions for our state cancer registry profession and help direct the continuing education opportunities at the state level.

The enjoyments of being an ICRA officer is the chance to get to know others around the state and build your network of work relationships, while receiving or giving mentoring to others. Also reimbursement to the national conference can be a perk for officers.

Iowa Registries can only be valuable when quality data is collected and this is only possible with our effort and a focus on Education!

Please email me, or Bobbi Matt and say YES, I want to serve as ICRA officer in 2014!

Judy Sebern Beachy

NCRA 39th Annual Educational Conference in San Francisco, CA...CHECK

Message from the President:

I want to thank ICRA for providing me with hotel, flight and registration and the educational opportunities. It was an intense three days of nonstop learning! It was great to see some Iowa faces in the crowd and we all took some time to see the wonders of San Francisco after our busy day! Personally the food was my favorite as not only do I love to eat, but seafood is one of my favorites!!  I was also able to tour Alcatraz at night which was truly amazing. It is a self-guided tour and truly amazing!!! While the cable car was exciting and unique, I could have done without the rats we saw multiple times while waiting to load into the cable car! Networking is always a bonus when you go to these types of meetings. I attended the State Presidents Luncheon and it was fascinating talking with these women and sharing our ideas. I had a couple of people ask for more information on things that our Iowa Association is doing and how they can get the process going with their state association. I also got great ideas on something’s that our association could do to have more involvement and to help get more educational opportunities available to our members! The ICRA basket was a hit! Watch for an announcement of the winner and pictures of our members at NCRA!!

Message from the Vice President:

I wanted to thank you for providing me with the registration fee and the opportunity to attend the NCRA national conference in San Francisco as your Vice President.  So besides gaining 5 lbs from all the awesome seafood I gained some knowledge as well! Ha!

I was able to take a ferry tour of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. I hit “Fishermans Warf” and took in all the San Fran culture.

I was able to chat with registrars from all over and the consensus was the same, shortage of registrars at their facilities, not enough registrars to hire (if you even get the approval to hire).

Here are some of the takeaways that we thought were the most interesting:

As a COC Hospital, it was great to have several breakout sessions that focused on our standards.

BREAKING NEWS!!!  Effective July 1st 2013 Standard 5.2: Abstracting Timeliness is eliminated. It is being replaced by the RQRS standard (only for commendation) for January 1, 2014 cases.

SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!  NCRA published an updated 2012 survey with data showing salary considerations for Cancer Registrars. Check out the NCRA website for this link!!!

DID you KNOW…………..Registry data can be utilized for many purposes:  We ARE IMPORTANT!

·       Site specific research

·       Committees/meetings

·       Accrediting bodies

·       Assisting researchers

·       Administration

·       Need for new equip/services

·       Physician recruitment

·       Grants for fellowships

·       Potential donors

a message from our president

Please get your registration in now for the Fall Education Meeting and our 35th ICRA Celebration.

You only have two more days before you have to pay a late fee and the Hotel deadline is September 3rd.

The planning committee has planned a great Dinner Celebration for our 35th Celebration.  We will have a business meeting and installation of the new officers, too.  This is to be a fun night, not all "Business Meeting," so come and enjoy.

If anyone has old pictures from the past, stories, or anything else they would like to share, we are interested in you bringing them along for the night.  Tuesday will be filled with education so we won't have time for much reminiscing that day.  Please, Please bring your pictures and stories!  We have a few members that have been around since the beginning of ICRA.  It is interesting for the rest of us to hear what has changed over 35 years.  Instead of one person putting together something, I think it would be nice if everyone brought something: photoes, stories, anything!!

Judy will have cases for us to work on soon.  I'm sure she has some good ones, too!!

Hope everyone plans to come!!  Let's have a great 35th Celebration.

Have a great Labor Day Holiday!

Hello Everyone J

As most of you know, and for those who don’t, my husband Jeramy is currently deployed overseas. Among all his supervisory and military duties overseas, Jeramy alongside his twin brother Brandon and many of the men and women in their squadron are taking action to help raise awareness for cancer! J Attached is the website where you can monitor their progress/view pictures/see donations or donate yourself if you are interested(all donations go directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG) or sign up to be a Team Member and join them!  J Thank you all!!!

Note from Jeramy:

In an effort to increase cancer awareness we are coordinating a Movember aka Noshavember event. Those that are participating in Movember are going to grow out our mustaches for the whole month...who knows we may even keep it longer. With this, we are trying to raise money via sponsorship donations. All proceeds will be going to the Prostrate Cancer Foundation and to LIVESTRONG. We are taking donations and suggestions for the "2012 NCRA Basket."
We have a Cancer Awareness/"Evening for Two" theme going.

Use your "great minds" and let us know what you would like to see in the basket.
Carol Fredenburg is getting a women's t-shirt and a men's t-shirt and will pick up a pink Vera Bradley bag (like the grocery/shopping bags)to get it started. We are still trying to stay at $100.00. If you have suggestions or want to donate items, please let a member of the board know. This website is where we found the women's shirt. It should be a hit for our basket, not very many of them around.

please contact with your ideas or suggestions.  Also, we'd like a volunteer who would like to work with Carol in purchasing items for the basket.

Thanks for your help,

Electromagnetic Nav. Bronchoscopy wonderful to learn about.

Pathologist wonderful, i.e. immunestaining and new classification system.

Excellent exercises Judy and Rod, Continuing education is critical.

Room was crowded, noisy hallways, limited food selection and only diet pop (not good)

Speakers good, but facility poor.

No directions to where meeting was held, ran out of food and plates, doors left open, ran out of break snacks.

Boring coding exercise session, been nice if codes from CS manual was shown.

Good speakers.

Food could have included a salad or fruit.

45 minute talks are better than an entire hour.

Lunch was good, but ran out of toppings before everyone was through the line.

No instructions for reaching meeting room on brochure.

Tables very close together (not good)

I appreciated opportunity to do exercise PRIOR to workshop.

Great color handouts.

Room was cool (temp)

Meeting place difficult to find and not sure what parking ramp to use, meeting room cold, hallways noisy.

Name tags would have been nice, and driving directions to meeting area would have been helpful.

Please have signs to where the meeting room is located.

Ran out of food L

Round tables not the best for workshop.

Palliative Care was good, should have had an oncologist speak.

Room was crowded.

Would like to go over exercise first thing in morning instead of late in day.

No AM snacks, not enough food in PM snacks. Good speakers.

Want name tags and directions to workshop, round tables were not good seating.

Good job to have us do cases prior to meeting.

Ran out of food.

Was nice conference on lung.

Workshop was very good. Last session of abstracting and coding not as meaningful for those who did not have exercise ahead of time.

Need more health variety for breakfast, hot tea? Ran out of food at Lunch.

Use of script on last talk was annoying and unprofessional.

Table set up with round tables was difficult for classroom presentations.

Not enough choices of food. Potato bar was great, but could have had more toppings and more veggies.

Round tables very uncomfortable, would rather have fruit than sweets for break.

Nice colored handouts.

Wow, has your summer gone as fast as mine has?

It seems like it was just May and I was at the

NCRA meeting in Orlando. Speaking of Orlando, the NCRA conference was a great trip. I want to thank the ICRA for providing me with Hotel, Flight and Registration monies to attend. Many Iowa Hospitals and the SHRI made a good showing. I was happy to see so many hospitals still funding

the NCRA Conference. We had three busy days learning about changes to Standards,

Collaborative Staging, revised MPH rules, maintaining the quality of your data and changes that are in the future. Many people stayed another day and a half for the SEER workshop. I

encourage you to check websites for all the new information, it is updated frequently and there are new changes since NCRA.  Websites can be found by clicking on "Links" above.

I had a great time at the "Presidents Breakfast." We all shared information about each state's organization. It was a great learning opportunity. Many states are struggling to get their members to educational meetings. I am glad we do not have that problem in Iowa. Larger organizations charge around $100 for one day of CEU’s that might be one reason attendance is down. Other states have awards for an "Outstanding CTR" every year. I thought that was interesting. Many states get grants for the CTR certifications and to send members to the NCRA and regional conferences.

Did you see who won the "Iowa Basket" at Orlando? (Pictures on the web) She was so excited, and I was glad I was there when they drew for our basket. Thanks to Tanya and Renee for getting those pictures to our website so fast.

I want to encourage all of our members that have not registered as a member on our website, to please do so. This is where we want to communicate with our members so we won't have to send out mass e-mails all the time. The website will send you an email when there is a new posting.

Everyone should have received their registration for the Fall Educational Workshop. Please return it by August 31st, to Carol Fredenburg. We will be having our ICRA Business Meeting over the lunch hour.

Next fall is the ICRA's 35th anniversary and I would like to have input from our members for the celebration. So start thinking about what we can do to make this a special event. I have heard a few suggestions, but we need a lot more. Bring your suggestions to the meeting in September.

Looking forward to seeing you in September,

Survey Savvy: World Premiere of the 2012 Patient-Centered Standards
September 15-16, 2011
Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa
Hollywood, CA
Register Now!

The Commission on Cancer has spent nearly two years working closely with our cancer program constituents and CoC member organizations to develop a new set of patient-centered standards which will be implemented by CoC-accredited cancer programs beginning January 1, 2012.

To help our programs prepare for this change, we have redeveloped Survey Savvy to create a dynamic two-day workshop that will include a thorough review of the category changes, eligibility requirements, revised standards, and a focus on the value of the new patient-centered standards.

Our presenters include the experts and key members of the CoC leadership who have helped to develop the 2012 standards. Presenters will describe the rationale for and requirements of each standard, illustrate successful methods for implementation and compliance, and share their own best practice experience with you. All of this valuable information will help assist any cancer program in gaining an edge on a successful survey experience!

If you are a facility administrator or cancer program administrator, clinician or nurse, pain management or palliative care professional, oncology social worker or clinical trials data manager, cancer committee chair, Cancer Liaison Physician, genetic counselor, or cancer registrar, then this workshop is designed specifically for you.

I won the Iowa basket at NCRA a couple of weeks ago in Orlando and I just wanted to say I love it! I gave some of the goodies away to my nurse navigator and she loved the chocolate.

The Vera bag is so nice, I bring it to work and I always get compliments.

Just wanted to say I loved all of it and I'm glad it fit in my suitcase for the flight back.

I had the opportunity to volunteer to help with the 2011 SEER Workshop earlier in the year. At that time, May was months away, and I agreed to help develop a presentation on Colon Cancer staging. I chose this, since this is one of the sites I usually train on, and I’d be working with Shannon Vann (former boss at SHRI, who now works for NAACCR).

As it turned out, I not only created the PowerPoint, but was asked to present part of it. Wow my national speaking debut! Thanks to Tania for snapping this picture in Orlando Florida, May 19th.

I really appreciated the support my co-workers gave me that week. I can report that the Colon presentation went well.

Happy Cancer Registrar’s Week – “Pave the Way to a Cure”

Why "Pave the Way to a Cure"?
Using the analogy of a road as knowledge, we as Registrars “pave” that road and make it usable with our skill and commitment to collecting and processing quality cancer data. Direct patient care-givers as well as researchers are able to “drive” on that road toward cancer control and cure because of our contributions to the war on cancer. There are many detours and speed-bumps and quite a few pot-holes on this road. However, our data customers and ultimately our cancer patients benefit from our due diligence in producing and reporting quality data by making their cancer-journey as free from wrong turns as possible.

Governor Terri Branstad has proclaimed April 11th -15th, 2011, Cancer Registrar’s Week!

Take some time this week and celebrate, it’s our week! Check out the NCRA website on ways to celebrate with your staff and friends. Let me know what fun ideas you came up with, send pictures so we can add them to the website.

Hope all of you are enjoying the spring weather we are having, and I hope none of you had any damage from the storms over the weekend.

Is everyone ready for the ICRA meeting next week? It should be a very fun and educational day.

Please check the website often for news and updated information on meetings and any upcoming events.

Is anyone planning on going to Orlando in May for the NCRA Annual Meeting? I know our hospitals have a pretty tight budget anymore for travel and training. I hope a few of you get the opportunity to go. It sounds like a great meeting. I will be posting a summer news letter after my return to provide you all the information.

Have a great Easter,

ICRA President

I want to wish all of you a "Happy Thanksgiving" and a "Wonderful Holiday Season."  Soon the bitter cold and that "white" stuff will move in upon us (I think I can wait as long as possible for that).

I want to thank you for electing me your President.  I am very proud to represent the State of Iowa.  We have a great group of people working in the cancer registries and SHRI.

The Board and I have had our first meeting and we have a lot to accomplish in the next two years.  First, we have decided to change providers for our website/blog.  It will save us money and be easier to manage.  Renee Hoyt has been working to load everything on the new website/blog and you have received an invitation to sign up and register.   The membership list will be seen by members only. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me or Renee know.  We want the website to be used and have updated information on it.

The contents of the library are getting pretty outdated so we are looking at purchasing a couple of books and to get some updated training on CDs to check out.  We want updated CTR materials for anyone wanting to pass their CTR exam.  With everything going online, we are also going to have a website list with everything available.

To look ahead a little bit, in the Fall of 2012, we will be celebrating our "35th ICRA Anniversary."  We need everyone's ideas and input to have a great celebration.  Please give us suggestions of anything you would like to do.  We have a few good ideas, but we need more.

We also need volunteers to host meetings in their facilities.  I am hosting the Spring Meeting 2011 in Ames. We need a place for the Fall 2011 meeting and then the Spring and Fall for 2012.  ICRA meetings are fun to plan and we get to travel to different parts of the state.

It was good to see everyone at the Fall meeting.

Again, have a "Great Holiday Season!"

"We need your help.  I need your help.  We need money for research.  It may not save my life.  It may save my children's life.  It may save someone you love.  And it's very important."                   ~Jim Valvano
